United target, Karim Benzema of Lyon, delivers and indictment of his pursuers and the league they play in. He would rather play in Spain for a beautiful team like Barcelona. He sounds a bit like countryman Thierry Henry when he left for Spain this summer:
"The Premier League does not hold too much attraction to me...Although they have great teams and I consider that I could play there, the style of game they play does not attract me...I love La Liga because they play beautiful football there...As far as football is concerned, Barca are the team I prefer today because they play it on touch."
Hmm. Is one player's judgement enough to take United off of our beautiful team list? We wonder what Benzema would have to say about Arsenal? But then Arsenal manager Wenger would never pay the kind of money Lyon will ask for Benzema. He will develop Benzema's of his own.

That beautiful, doomed team
James, James, James. Lawton that is. Who better, more beautiful than to capture the Munich Air Disaster just right. By focusing so touchingly, truly on the late, great, greatest (?) Duncan Edwards. Thank Goodness for words, writing, newspapers, newspaper writers, football writers who really could be writing about "more important stuff. Thank you Jam-o for this; this bit at the end:
"But then, when tribute is paid to Manchester United tonight, when the intervening years shrivel and so many are young again in the memory of that beautiful, doomed team, inevitably there will be one regret above all others. It was that we never got to see if it was really true that Duncan Edwards was the greatest player who, despite his epic fight, never got to live. Not in the fullness of his talent. Not in the haunting reach of all his possibilities."
And the rest:

You have to try to play the right way
Man City manager Sven Goran Eriksson is not interested in winning ugly. He thinks that the road to excellence and victory is built on the beautiful game:
"We have to start playing the football we are capable of from the first minute against West Ham. It is important we learn from the Everton game. You have to try to play the right way. We did not play football. We kicked it long all the time, especially in the first half. That is not our way of playing. Teams make it difficult for you but we have to overcome that.”
